Judy Garland - Smile
This song was written by Charlie Chaplin in 1936. Lyrics were added in 1954 by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons.
I love this performance. Look at the way she holds the microphone with both hands, the way her eyebrows crease, her pause to regroup at the end. Listen to the quavering in her voice. She doesn’t sing it like something she’s learned, she sings it like it’s something she’s bravely told herself every day of her life.
Dylan, Ty, Tara, and Hannah: you need to watch the whooooole thing.
